Tree Climbing Gear for Arborists, Professionals & Serious Climbers
Tree work doesn't leave room for gear that almost works. At Ality Wholesale, every product in this collection comes from Petzl, one of the most trusted names in professional climbing equipment worldwide. Whether you're a commercial arborist running daily removals or building your first kit, the gear here is built for real working conditions.
What's in the Collection
Eight products. All Petzl. Here's what each piece does:
Harnesses
The Petzl SEQUOIA SRT is built specifically for SRT climbing. It sits lower than a rock climbing harness, distributes weight through the seat, and stays comfortable during long canopy sessions. The go-to choice for professional tree care.
Descenders and Mechanical Prusiks
The Petzl Zigzag Plus is a mechanical prusik that grips the rope when weighted and releases when you shift. It gives you far more control than a traditional friction hitch cord. The NEOX and GRIGRI handle controlled lowering and top-rope setups.
Pulleys
The Micro Traxion is ultralight and doubles as a progress-capture pulley, useful for hauling and self-rescue. The FIXE is a smooth, straightforward rope pulley built for everyday rigging.
Helmets
The Vertex Vent and Strato are both ANSI-rated. The Vertex Vent runs cooler with active ventilation, better for warm climates and summer work. The Strato is more streamlined. Both accept visors and hearing protection accessories.
What Every Climber Needs -- The Core Kit
New to tree work? These are the seven pieces of tree climbing equipment every arborist needs before going aloft:
- Arborist Harness : Side D-rings for flipline attachment, lower bridge than a rock harness. The SEQUOIA SRT is a solid starting point
- Flipline or Lanyard : Wraps around the trunk and attaches to both D-rings, keeping you positioned while your hands work
- Lanyard Adjuster : Lets you dial in tension and reposition without detaching
- Climbing Rope : Low-stretch and pliable enough to hold knots. Rock climbing ropes are too elastic. Caving ropes are too stiff. Use only ropes rated for arborist work
- Prusik or Mechanical Prusik : Grips the rope to hold position, releases when you move. The Zigzag Plus handles this better than a cord-based friction hitch
- Carabiners : Rated climbing carabiners only. Four is the working minimum for most arborists
- Helmet : Falling debris is a constant risk. The Vertex Vent and Strato both meet ANSI standards

FAQ
What tree climbing gear do I need as a beginner?
Seven core pieces: arborist harness, flipline or lanyard, lanyard adjuster, climbing rope, prusik or mechanical prusik, at least four rated carabiners, and a certified helmet. The Petzl SEQUOIA SRT and Zigzag Plus are both solid starting points for a professional kit.
Can I use rock climbing gear for tree work?
No. Rock climbing ropes are too elastic, and rock climbing harnesses don't have the side D-rings needed for flipline attachment. Only gear rated for arborist or tree climbing use should go up in a tree.
Is the Petzl Zigzag Plus suitable for SRT climbing?
The standard Zigzag Plus is designed for DRT (double rope technique). For SRT setups, confirm you're ordering the SRT variant before purchasing, the wrong version won't work with your system.
How often should tree climbing equipment be replaced?
Replace ropes at the first sign of fraying, core exposure, or chemical contamination, most manufacturers recommend full replacement every three to five years regardless. Helmets should be replaced after any significant impact. Always follow the manufacturer's retirement criteria for each piece of gear.
What's the difference between the Petzl Vertex Vent and the Strato?
Both are ANSI-rated. The Vertex Vent has ventilation slots for active cooling, noticeably better in warm weather. The Strato has a lower profile. Both accept visors and hearing protection. The right pick comes down to climate and personal preference.
Is certified tree climbing equipment really necessary?
Yes, and it goes beyond compliance. ANSI and CE certifications mean the gear has been independently tested under real climbing forces. Uncertified gear may look identical but carries no verified load rating and no tested failure point. For commercial arborists, certified equipment is also typically required by workplace safety regulations.
